November 14 - December 4, 2011: Surgery Mission at the Bubanza Hospital (Burundi)

On November 14, started the final mission of 2011 for Burundi. It was part of a large group of employees of ASL fMRI, as well as a former Chief of the laboratory analysis. To be precise, the expedition was composed by Dr. Piero Petricca, Director UOC of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of the S. Paolo di Civitavecchia, Dr. Alfredo Goldsmith, Medical Director of the UOC itself, Dr. Sandro Tinti, Pediatrician of the same hospital, the Nurse Catia Di Natale, employed by the Department of Orthopaedics dellìOspedale S. Paul, as well as by Dr. Claudio Gambetta, hematologist, former Director UOC laboratory analysis of the S. Spirit of Rome.
During the three weeks in Bubanza were performed 30 surgeries Orthopaedics, which involved 20 men and 10 women, aged between 1 and 57 years, 19 of these patients were less than 16 years, for an overall mean age of just under 18 years. The most frequent pathologies concerned young patients with unilateral or bilateral clubfoot (8 of 30, 26% of the total), patients with osteomyelitis (3 of 30 to 10%), patients with fractures (6 to 30 of 20 %), sequelae of poliomyelitis, outcomes of burns, various malformations.
The type of disease and its distribution by sex and age of this last mission is almost comparable to previous ones, and tells us that congenital malformations of the feet (clubfoot) have a very high incidence in the population of Burundi, as well as osteomyelitis, burns and trauma, with a significant increase in high-energy trauma, which cause severe and permanent damage. Should not be forgotten also the results of polio paralysis and paralysis of the sciatic nerve after intramuscular injection of quinine, used in large quantities to combat malaria, which is still the leading cause of death in Burundi and throughout Africa.
In addition to purely surgical aspect, it is given a lot of importance to outpatient visits, the medications and the follow-up treatments, packaging and / or renovation of casts to simple rehabilitation exercises.
